It’s Time to Ditch the Functional Resume and Use a Chronological Format Instead

    December 6, 2020 /

I have recently worked with jobseekers who have spent months trying to find a job after being unemployed and clients who are looking to switch career paths. During my time with them, I ask them to send me a copy of their resume and low and behold a significant amount of them have a functional resume. When I ask them why they are using a functional style resume… it’s usually that they have either read somewhere that it should be used to hide employment gaps, lack of experience, or when you are trying to change careers. What I find shocking is when an employment center suggests using the functional format.…

How Many Jobs Should an Active Job Seeker Apply Fo How Many Jobs Should an Active Job Seeker Apply For?

Unfortunately, I cannot give you exact metrics to say that if you apply for “x” many jobs each day, you will find a job in “x” days. You could apply for a bazillion jobs a day and never get a call or email back (chances are you are applying for the wrong jobs or need a little resume refresher).

But what I can tell you is this…

Have you ever heard the saying looking for a job is a full-time job? It’s because it’s true!

The amount of time you spend searching for a job when you are an active job seeker should resemble the amount of time you’d expect to be working. So if it’s a full-time job that you are looking for, I hate to say it, but until you land one you should be spending approximately 7 or 8 hours per day searching for job openings, tailoring your resume and cover letter, applying for jobs, going on interviews, etc.

Within this time frame you should be able to submit approximately 6-8 applications per day. There may be limitations to this number depending on the job demand or a geographic location that you may be looking to work in.

If you are currently employed full-time and are searching for a new job, then it is likely that the time you have to spend job searching will be a lot less – especially if you have a family etc. that requires your attention when you are not working. What I do suggest is you scale your job search accordingly. Select a day or a few days of the week that you will allocate to your job search to keep you on track with your job search goals.

If you are applying for 6-8 jobs per day and have not had any success, then there is likely something else that is going on that you should look into further.

So you have gotten to the end of your interview an So you have gotten to the end of your interview and you are asked if you have any questions, it can be daunting to know whether you will hear back from the company. When you ask “did I get the job”, it can put the interviewer in an awkward position. Unless they definitely know that you are not a fit for the role, they may need time to consider your interview for various reasons. And let’s face it, if they said “NO” to you right away, what would happen next? Crickets? Would you try to resell yourself? Awkward, right?

It is likely that they still have other candidates to meet or they may need to discuss your interview with other key decision makers. There is a good chance that they may not know if you are “the one”. You may have shined bright like a diamond, but the interviewer could be on the fence between you and another great candidate and may need time to mull it over.

So be patient. If you do not hear back within a reasonable timeframe, it would be okay to follow-up.

Instead ask – Is there a timeframe that has been determined to let candidates know if they are successful or not? Should I be a successful candidate, what are the next steps of the recruitment process?

Using these questions will then provide you with a timeframe to which you can follow-up if you have not heard from the company regarding your application status. It will also leave you with some information as to what you can expect for any remaining steps in the recruitment process.

When starting your job search you might feel overw When starting your job search you might feel overwhelmed with where you should be looking for job vacancies.

Some job seekers worry that they might be spending too much time searching for opportunities on one board and might be missing out on positions posted elsewhere. So, you are doing “all the things” and are on every job board out there (even the small ones).

Let’s look at what makes for a good job search engine.

For a job seeker, the best job search engine is going to:

✅Provide a lot of job postings (high volume of open positions) from various companies and industries

✅Have up-to-date job listings

✅A platform that is easy to use

The top 2 job search websites I recommend are ZipRecruiter and Indeed.

Why have I selected them?

The biggest reason is the integration with a company’s Internal Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and HRIS Systems.

As an HR professional, I remain up-to-date with recruitment tools and human resource information systems. A tid-bit of information that I want to share with you is that most companies are using Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) like Workday and BambooHR that have applicant tracking systems built-in AND integrate with job search websites.

Because it is easy for companies to use these job boards to promote their job openings, I have selected these boards as my top 2 job search websites in Canada and the USA. If companies are frequently using them to post their jobs, you’ll have access to an abundance of job opportunities that they are actively recruiting candidates for.

[JOB INTERVIEW PREP] Behavioral interview questi [JOB INTERVIEW PREP]

Behavioral interview questions are used by recruiters and hiring manager to test job competencies.

Questions asked by an interviewer are based on the competencies required to perform the job successfully...

If an employer is looking for to test PROBLEM SOLVING/ANALYSIS, here are some examples of behaviour-based interview questions you might be asked in a job interview:

👉Can you tell me about a time where you thought you had successfully handled a problem only to figure out that you had really only put a Band-Aid on a much larger problem. What was the situation and what did you do?

👉Describe a complicated problem that you had to work through while on the job. What steps did you take to gain a better understanding of the problem? How did you solve it? Looking back is there anything you would have done differently?

👉Tell me about a problem that you uncovered that you felt did not fall within your job responsibility. What did you do?

✨Don’t forget to answer behavior-based job interview questions using the STAR technique identifying SPECIFIC EXAMPLES.

1. Identify and explain the SITUATION
2. Explain what TASKS needed to be done and your responsibility
3. Explain the specific ACTIONS you took and why you chose those steps
4. Describe the RESULTS of your actions – elaborate on your learnings or if you would have handled the situation differently looking back

Don’t forget to save this post for later.

The DO’s and DON’TS of Following Up After a Jo The DO’s and DON’TS of Following Up After a Job Interview

Trying to decide what “the best practice” is for a job candidate after an interview?

Use these quick tips to help you determine what you should do!

DO’S:

👉Ask about next steps – in your job interview ask about the next steps in the recruitment/ candidate selection process. This will help you understand where they are at and what their plans are

👉Send a thank you email after your job interview – this doesn’t have to be a novel, just a short and sweet email thanking the interviewer for their time and a statement reiterating your excitement about the opportunity.

👉Follow-up within the appropriate time frame – assuming you have asked them about next steps within the candidate selection process, use their answer to guide any follow-up that you decide to do. If for example they state that they are completing first rounds of interviews and will be contacting successful candidates the following week to book second stage interviews, then wait until the following week. If you haven’t heard from them, then it would be “okay” to follow up. Any sooner it may seem that you didn’t listen or understand their timeline/ process.

DON’TS:

🚫Immediately ask for feedback

🚫Bug the recruitment team / hiring manager – it’s one thing to follow-up, it’s a whole other thing to become a nuisance. Be careful not to cross the line!
