It’s Time to Ditch the Functional Resume and Use a Chronological Format Instead

    December 6, 2020 /

I have recently worked with jobseekers who have spent months trying to find a job after being unemployed and clients who are looking to switch career paths. During my time with them, I ask them to send me a copy of their resume and low and behold a significant amount of them have a functional resume. When I ask them why they are using a functional style resume… it’s usually that they have either read somewhere that it should be used to hide employment gaps, lack of experience, or when you are trying to change careers. What I find shocking is when an employment center suggests using the functional format.…

Receiving a job offer can be exhilarating! You have worked so hard putting yourself out there, submitting applications, attending interviews, and you finally get that job/ employment offer you have been waiting for! YAAAAS! via GIPHY A verbal job offer is usually paired with a written letter for you to review and sign back to the organization. This offer of employment should be reviewed carefully so you understand what you are getting into. If you do not agree to the terms laid out in the letter, then you would not sign it back. It is at this point you would engage in negotiations with the employer – but tread carefully…

⁣
I am sure that every interview tip you have come across states that you should ask questions at the end of a job interview...⁣
⁣
EEEK.... ensure you ask intuitive questions not these ones! 😱⁣
⁣
1. Did I get the job?

When you ask “did I get the job”, it can put the interviewer in an awkward position. Unless they definitely know that you are not a fit for the role, they may need time to consider your interview for various reasons. And let’s face it, if they said “NO” to you right away, what would happen next? Crickets? Would you try to resell yourself? Awkward, right?⁣
Instead ask – Is there a timeframe that has been determined to let candidates know if they are successful or not? Should I be a successful candidate, what are the next steps of the recruitment process?⁣

2. How did I do?

Giving feedback to candidates is a sensitive topic to which an interviewer will tread lightly. Better yet, there may be company processes or policies in place whereby feedback can only be given by Recruiters or an HR Department after the interview process has wrapped up. If you phrase the question as “how did I do?” the answer you will likely get is “good”. You won’t be told that you were amazing, even if your interview was fantastic. On the flip side, if you blew the interview, they likely won’t expose why.⁣
If we take a step back and look at the underlying “request for feedback” by asking how you did, there is a time and place just not in such words as “how did I do”. And not during the interview.⁣
Instead ask – Regardless of whether I am selected for this position, at a later date would you be able to provide me with feedback of my interview?⁣

🚨ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS follow the application process set out by an employer.

💥Think of it as the first test as to whether you can follow instructions when given to you.

If they ask you to apply in-person, apply in-person. If they ask you to apply online, apply online. If they ask you to complete an application in addition to submitting a resume, complete the application. If they ask for a cover letter, send a cover letter. If they ask for a portfolio, include your portfolio.

I can keep going, but I think you get the gist.

Why am I telling you this? Because I don’t want your resume to get discarded! Too many applicants miss out on opportunities because they haven’t done what an employer requests in their application process.

Always read the full job posting and follow the process they outline on their website or job advertisement so you can pass the first test they give you!
Struggling to decide what career path to pursue? Struggling to decide what career path to pursue?

Here are some ideas to help you figure things out…

👩‍🔬Taking a career or work personality test is a great place to start if you need some direction. Even if you have been in the workforce for years and are struggling to find a career you feel happy in, a career test can be beneficial. The test that I refer clients to is CareerFitter (link in bio).

🕵️‍♀️Working with a career coach can help you uncover jobs that you wouldn’t have considered on your own and they can provide you with straightforward feedback. They will get to know you, your objectives, and help you find something you’ll be happy and successful in.

🥷Job shadow. You don’t have to be a student to shadow professionals in their careers! Ask your HR department or Manager if you can shadow someone within your organization. Let them know what you are interested in and ask if there would be an opportunity to learn more about what they do. And, if you are a student, reach out and ask a professional if you can job shadow them.

👩‍💼Schedule an informational interview. Informational interviews provide a great opportunity to learn more about professions and career paths. Set up an interview with a professional working in a field you are interested in and ask them questions about their job, the pros and cons, and any other inquiries that will help you decide what you want to do.

📚Read books – there are so many great books out there that can help you find your way!
